Once upon a time, before Talbot Avenue was born, Kim and I met as housemates and over a period of a few months we quickly came to realise that we were destined to be in one another’s lives. We are both the kind of people who like to surround ourselves by dreamers, doers, believers and thinkers. Many a time we have spent under the moonlight, drinking rose, dissecting life, our purpose, what connects us to this world and others around us. It has always been important to open up a safe space between us where we can each share all that matters to us, from the mundane to the magical.
Keeping this in mind, many moons ago when a little pot of gold somehow magically appeared on our computer screens, a website called Your Zen Life, you can imagine how excited we were to get lost in the digital pages.
Your Zen Life is a website created by actress, mama and all-over goddess, Teresa Palmer, and her best friend Phoebe Tonkin, back in 2012. Many know Teresa Palmer from watching her grace our silver screens, she’s starred alongside some of our favourite actors and actresses, including Christian Bale, Nicholas Hoult, Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton.
YZL was developed out of an idea to create an online space that focuses on what connects us rather than what separates us. It is a positive environment where like-minded individuals come together to form a community where they can encourage and support each other. A place to share lessons, material and insights into anything related to life, health, mindfulness and daily interactions.
YZL has been the inspiration behind hours of work procrastination, many many manifest boards cluttering our office, and countless heart-to-heart late night chats. Unsurprisingly, we were beyond excited and humbled when the YZL girls reached out to us to collaborate on their re-launch. Teresa and her beautiful team have been working tirelessly to build an even more zen (who knew it was possible) site, a new forum that achieves serenity, uniqueness and connection. To celebrate the re-launch, we have partnered up with YZL and other supporting brands to giveaway an epic wellness pack (click here to enter), and we were so fortunate enough to sit down for a Q&A with our number one goddess-girl-crush herself (and fellow Talbot Ave lover), Teresa Palmer.

Our Sit Down With Teresa Palmer
What inspired you to start YZL?
YZL began back in 2012, it was the brain child of my dear friend Phoebe Tonkin and myself when we realised that we both had a strong interest in the health and wellness realm and both wanted to do something fulfilling away from the industry we primarily work in. We also knew we were in a position where we could use our profiles to be of service. And thus, we wanted to create a community of like-minded people that would unite members from the world over to learn, teach, connect with and inspire one another, and from there, our online scrapbook that is YZL, was born.
What can we expect from the new YZL site?
I am so thrilled to share the new YZL site with everyone! This re-launch is one of the most exciting things that I have had brewing over the past year of my life. The old YZL was a beautiful starting point for us and we had always envisioned a site for the future such as the one I bring to you now. We have a lot more experts that will be contributing as well as many many conscious minded women and men who I personally turn to for a recharge. The aesthetic of the site is more streamlined, easier to navigate, less cluttered (more zen!) with an amazing new logo hand drawn by my good friend Kate K-G and new features including a community forum and a shop too.
How would you describe your own “zen life” philosophy?
Being mindful and living consciously, showing up in your day-to-day life. Always coming from a place of love and spreading it far and wide, listening to your body, challenging your mind, making time for yourself, eating a healthy but balanced diet, moving your body, engaging and surrounding yourself with positive people that light you up and encourage you, resting and finding stillness (less clutter less busy), being mindful in your interactions, consciously choosing to care for the environment and animals and easing your eco-footprint on the world so we can preserve it for our children and our children’s children.
What is your favourite Talbot style?
I have two favourites! HAMARA LEGGINGS and TINGO CROP TOP and I also really love the NAAVA LEGGINGS matched with one of the amazing tanks! They feel great to workout in, look amazing and feel so comfy on.
What is your take on the “athleisure” trend?
I love it! I think it’s great and while you won’t find me in my athleisure gear 24/7 – as a mum always on the go I am looking for comfortable, practical wardrobe pieces that still look good. That’s why this style suits me because it means on days when I am running around, I can drop my son off at pre-school, do errands, maybe get a quick gym session in before picking him up and it’s practical, comfortable and ‘no-fuss’.
Do you have a daily mantra? If yes, what is it?
Every experience I have is perfect for my growth.
What is your personal food and fitness philosophy?
When it comes to food and fitness I think it’s really important to listen to your body, tap into your instincts and do what is right for you at the time. I don’t believe in diets or limiting yourself from a treat. My fitness philosophy is quite similar, consciously make an effort to listen to your body and also mix it up, I feel stagnant when I constantly have the same routine. Sometimes your body wants intense cardio and other times you will find it responds better to a gentle yoga session or going on a hike. It is really important not to feel guilty if you miss a day of exercise or indulge in an ice-cream or some chocolate.
Workout I’m currently obsessed with…
At the moment I am loving a good old fashioned gym workout – because I have been traveling so much for work lately, it is something I know I can always do as there is always a gym in my hotel or nearby. When I am home I really enjoy my mom and bub yoga classes!
Favourite dish to cook…
Hmmm this is a tough one, but I would have to say my eggplant parmegiana! It’s definitely a ‘go-to’ in our house and it’s a fav with my friends when they come over for dinner! I am also a total sucker for Mexican so we often have Mexican feasts with lots of guac and chips, quesadillas and tacos. I’ve learnt as a mama that quesadillas are perfect to sneak greens and beans into for the kids!
Who inspires you?
My mum is my number one ultimate inspiration. She is the most selfless, pure of heart, sweet, caring, compassionate human being I know – she is the definition of love and I’m so glad my son can learn by her example.
Best piece of advice you have ever received…
Follow your heart! If you lead your life and make all your decisions from a heart centred place you are on the right track.
Most romantic thing someone has done for you…
I would have to say when my husband and I met, whilst technically it wasn’t something he did for me, more something we chose together. We wrote love letters to each other for 40 days via email and got to know each other that way prior to meeting. To me, it was the epitome of romance and allowed us to get to know each other on a deeper level and fall in love with each other’s spirits as opposed to anything physical.
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
Any island location! I love the serenity of the ocean and being surrounded by water, I love spending time outdoors and with my son at the beach – I was recently just in Hawaii for work and any downtime I had we spent at the beach, Bodhi loves playing in the sand!
Tell us something about yourself that most would find surprising…
I love true crime shows! Well, it’s more than love – I am obsessed with anything related to true crime, cold cases, murder mysteries. My ideal night in is with the hubs, on the couch watching true crime!
Sneakers, heels or barefoot?
Always barefoot haha! At home you will rarely find me with shoes on, I love being grounded and feeling the connection to the earth and my surroundings. When I am out and about I am usually in sneakers or some easy slip on / off sandals. I rarely wear heels unless it is for an occasion.
What does “active” mean to you?
Being active to me means moving your body in the way it is telling you to at the time. Sometimes this calls for slow movement, perhaps yoga or pilates, and other times you really need that intense cardio. Tuning into your body and being as active as feels right at the time.
Favourite place to visit in Australia and why…
Adelaide – it’s always home and will always have a huge chunk of my heart! I have recently purchased my dads property and will be aiming to spend much more time there from now on, I really want my son to have a part of his upbringing in Australia and get to have fond experiences similar to my own childhood. I have to say, even though I may be biased, we have some of the most amazing beaches in my opinion too!
What is playing on your iPod right now?
I am always changing up what I am listening to on my iPod but right now it ranges from moody and cinematic electronic music like Brian Eno, to underground rap battle hip hop artists like Big L and KRS- one, then on to Moby and Nirvana. Quite an eclectic mixed bag and really depends on the state of my mind at the time!
Be the change you wish to see in the world. – Gandhi.
What can we expect to see from Teresa Palmer in 2016?
Well, physically you may see a lot of me as I have quite a few movies coming out! I have worked back to back to back since Bodhi was born and the films are all being released this year. I am also currently busy directing a film with my husband in Philadelphia which we are excited to share with the world. I have the new YZL launch as well as Your Zen Mama which I am currently working on with my friend Sarah Wright Olsen and will be launching soon.
A big thank you to Teresa for taking the time to sit down with us! Make sure you head to www.yourzenlife.com and prepare to get lost in the magic.
